2013-11-14

Julphar today unveiled that it would soon make available in the UAE, a revolutionary digital continuous glucose monitoring device (CGM) that will help patients easily and conveniently monitor their glucose level around the clock.

The unveiling follows an exclusive agreement with the manufacturer, Dexcom, a world leader in glucose monitoring systems, to market the new device, Dexcom Platinum G4, in the UAE and the region.

The novel device is currently under review by the UAE ministry of health for final approval and is considered to be the most accurate and easiest to use glucose monitoring technology available. It has already been approved by the US Food and Drug Association (FDA) as well as European Medicines Agency (EMA), and is currently available in the US, Canada, leading European countries, and Australia.

“We are eager to make the G4 Platinum available in the UAE and the region in view of the amazing solutions it provides for patients, their caregivers and other health care providers. This game changing technology indicates a real transformation in diabetes management with the peace of mind it provides patients in order to control their glucose level around the clock, whether at work, exercising or sleeping”, said Joseph Saldanha, GM, Julphar Diabetes.

“As a healthcare leader in the region, we are committed to improving quality of life and health of the communities, and I think the G4 Platinum is the best news we can share with both patients and the local industry on this World’s Diabetes Day. Julphar will make sure that all relevant stakeholders will receive proper training on the use of the new device”, added Mr. Saldanha.

The Dexcom G4 PLATINUM CGM system consists of three parts: a sensor, transmitter, and monitor. The tiny sensor - about the diameter of a human hair —is inserted by the user under the skin on the abdomen. A small transmitter sends data wirelessly to a sleek and small monitor, which easily fits in a purse or pocket. It provides data every 5 minutes for up to 7 consecutive days, quickly and easily showing the body's response to medication, food and exercise. If users are outside their target zones, configurable alarms alert them so that they can take action.

The rectangle-shaped receiver features the first color built-in LCD display that gives you an picture showing not only glucose levels, but also the speed and direction in which one’s glucose is moving. With the longer distance range and improved technology, it is believed that the new sensor can capture up to 97% of the patient’s glucose readings. Also, with a standard USB port, patients can easily download and share their CGM information with their loved ones, caregiver, or doctor.

Peter Gerhardsson, Dexcom’s Vice President of International Business Development, said: “Together with Julphar, we are excited to make our CGM technology available in the UAE and the region to help diabetic people manage their blood sugar easily and most convenientlyand improve quality of life.”

Diabetes is one of the key focus therapeutic areas for Julphar. The company is currently investing in biotechnology and produces bio-smiliarinsulins from raw materials to finished products. In 2012, the company completed a world-class diabetes plant that cost over $150m and became the first and only company in the MENA region to produce the raw material used for producing insulin.
